In the midst of mountains, Scandinavian Mountains Airport is ready for landing in December 2019. The new facility is being built on the previous site of the small Sälen airfield on the Swedish side of the border together with Norway. All the infrastructure is new and state of the art.
Security on focus
“It's an exciting project. I've built many big buildings, but never before an airport. Airports are strictly governed by a common international regulatory framework with a high focus on security. So the airport contains much more technology and security than I could have imagined – double the amount in most places,” says Trond Moen, who is part of the project management for the airport building.
Up until now, the airspace around the Scandinavian Mountains Airport has been uncontrolled. The airport is the first in the world to be built without a control tower, utilising instead a Remote Tower Centre (RTC).
Caverion installs the ventilation system
The works in the terminal building are beginning during winter 2018-2019.
An airport is a world of its own where people come and go. The amount of air traffic also varies over the year. This causes a varied flow of people, both during the day and on an annual level, and therefore the need for airflow varies. It places high demands for flexible solutions so that the air in the 6,000 square metre terminal property is adapted to the current occupancy rate and provides a good indoor climate, regardless of load.
At the Scandinavian Mountains Airport, Caverion solves the technical challenges by installing dampers controlled by presence and CO2 sensors and adapting airflows according to the number of people in the premises.
“The need for ventilation does not only provide a comfortable indoor climate, it also saves energy. And in an airport where rooms often have high ceilings and large volumes of air, there is a lot to save,” says Fredrik Björklund, District Manager of Caverion Sweden.
Improved access to alpine destinations
Brett Weihart, CEO of Scandinavian Mountains Airport, says that the new airport will create accessibility right in the heart of the region. Sälenfjällen and Trysil are Sweden's and Norway's largest alpine destinations.
“With improved infrastructure, we take another step in the development of the new large region that is growing. Through better accessibility for both Swedish and international guests, we contribute to increased growth and more jobs in the region, while helping other stakeholders expand their business,” says Brett Weihart.
The main contractor for the project is PEAB and the end customer is Scandinavian Mountains Airport AB.
