Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Germany

The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) is the national research centre for animal health in Germany. The institute was founded in 1910 and named 1952 according to its founder Friedrich Loeffler. The FLI is situated on the Isle of Riems in the Baltic Sea near the city of Greifswald. Main research areas are animal viral diseases, molecular biology, virus diagnosis, immunology and epidemiology. As part of the current extension the Riems Institute completed Biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory facilities, which enable research activities on the most dangerous of viruses like Congo Crimean hemorrhagic fever virus, nipah virus or hendra virus.

Caverion installed air conditioning and ventilation systems for high-end clean rooms. Corporation has been taking care of technical maintenance of ventilation systems in the laboratory building since 2012 and in the office and conference areas since 2014.

Maintenance of the ventilation systems for the biosafety areas BSL 2-4 started in 2018 with call center service. Response time of 45 minutes is guaranteed around the clock depending on the priority of the system.

Requirements of air conditioning and ventilation systems in BSL-4 -laboratories:

Securing the necessary negative pressure and the pressure cascade in the containment

HEPA filtering of supply and exhaust air system installed by Caverion ensures the primary containment and thus contributes significantly to the bio-safety in the laboratory.

Requirements of extinguishing systems in BSL- 4 laboratories:

Prevent disruption of negative pressure and the pressure cascade in the containment 
Avoid damage to the containment

Avoid smoke and fire

Caverion developed a solution suitable for the sensitive area of BSL-4 laboratory and installed extinguishing systems with Halon substitutes. These types of extinguishers were used in the Riems Institute project due to minimizing of the adverse effects on the laboratory operation and the negative pressure control.
